about you. 00:04:29.001 --> 00:04:30.001 Who's Jeff Garber? 00:04:30.001 --> 00:04:32.000 How'd you get into the world of personal 00:04:32.000 --> 00:04:34.000 computers, especially in product development? 00:04:34.001 --> 00:04:38.000 Okay, well, where it all started, I guess, you could go as 00:04:38.000 --> 00:04:39.001 far back as when I was 11 years old. 00:04:39.001 --> 00:04:42.001 My father brought home a set of manuals, cobalt manuals from 00:04:42.001 --> 00:04:44.000 when he was working at Blue Cross and Blue Shield. 00:04:44.001 --> 00:04:47.000 I had shown some interest in math, so I didn't 00:04:47.000 --> 00:04:48.001 really get a chance to do anything with that. 00:04:49.000 --> 00:04:52.000 With the cobalt that I had learned at that point until I got into high school, at 00:04:52.000 --> 00:04:54.000 which point we had a data processing course. 00:04:55.000 --> 00:04:57.001 The way that we did programming there was we would punch our programs into 00:04:57.001 --> 00:04:59.001 punched cards, take them down to the main office. 00:05:00.000 --> 00:05:02.001 A little man in a van would come by every couple days and take the punched cards 00:05:02.001 --> 00:05:05.000 down to the district office, which was a mile or so down the road. 00:05:06.000 --> 00:05:08.001 And a couple of days later, we would get our printouts back and he may or may not 00:05:08.001 --> 00:05:11.000 have dropped the cards in the mud and gotten them all mixed up for us. 00:05:12.000 --> 00:05:14.000 And at which point the compiler would tell us that we'd misplaced a 00:05:14.000 --> 00:05:16.000 period and that we'd had to do the whole thing over again. 00:05:16.000 --> 00:05:19.000 So it was not what you would consider high bandwidth interactive 00:05:19.000 --> 00:05:21.000 computing at that point. 00:05:22.000 --> 00:05:23.001 But the fortunate thing was that 00:05:23.001 --> 00:05:25.000 the folks there did give me a little bit of leeway. 00:05:25.000 --> 00:05:28.000 I managed to get some of the regular products out of the way, or the projects, 00:05:28.001 --> 00:05:32.000 how their products and then there were projects, out of the way quickly and wrote 00:05:32.000 --> 00:05:35.001 some games that I'd wanted to write for a long time and got three or four people 00:05:35.001 --> 00:05:39.000 involved in playing a game at that point, which the district was kind of 00:05:39.000 --> 00:05:41.000 surprised as to why these reports were coming out in their line printer 00:05:41.000 --> 00:05:43.001 concerning whose star system had blown up, whose spaceships. 00:05:44.001 --> 00:05:45.001 And they were expecting grade reports. 00:05:46.000 --> 00:05:50.001 But then when I went to my undergraduate work at Wabash College, a small liberal 00:05:50.001 --> 00:05:54.001 arts school in Crawfordville, Indiana, and that was my really first sort of hands 00:05:54.001 --> 00:05:58.001 -on approach where they had a PDP-11 that was interactive. 00:05:58.001 --> 00:06:00.000 I could just sit down and program in BASIC and I 00:06:00.000 --> 00:06:02.000 would type to it and it would type back to me. 00:06:02.001 --> 00:06:05.000 I said, wow, this sure beats having the man in the van take 00:06:05.000 --> 00:06:06.001 it down to the district office every couple of days. 00:06:07.001 --> 00:06:10.000 I managed to sort of learn BASIC programming with that. 00:06:12.000 --> 00:06:17.000 In January of 1979, I managed to convince my folks that it was indeed a good idea 00:06:17.000 --> 00:06:19.000 for me to go out and buy a personal computer of my own. 00:06:19.001 --> 00:06:22.001 Mom was still on record as having said something like, well, what are you going 00:06:22.001 --> 00:06:25.000 to do with it and how well I could write programs and sell them. 00:06:25.000 --> 00:06:26.001 And she was kind of doubtful about that. 00:06:26.001 --> 00:06:28.001 And I remind her of that every now and then. 00:06:29.000 --> 00:06:31.000 That was an Apple II in 1979. 00:06:32.000 --> 00:06:36.000 And just started sort of tinkering around with that and wrote some programs for 00:06:36.000 --> 00:06:38.001 that, some of which sold, some of which didn't. 00:06:40.000 --> 00:06:44.000 Later, when I got done with my work at Wabash, at which time I was one of the 00:06:44.000 --> 00:06:46.001 first people with an Apple on campus, which everybody thought was really neat 00:06:46.001 --> 00:06:49.001 because I could put somebody's report into a word processor and when they found 00:06:49.001 --> 00:06:52.001 it was just a few lines short of the five pages that were required, bring the 00:06:52.001 --> 00:06:56.000 margins in by three spaces, run it off again, and it would be acceptable. 00:06:57.001 --> 00:07:03.000 I started a PhD project at the Georgia Institute of Technology. 00:07:04.000 --> 00:07:08.000 And around that same time was when the IBM personal computer first came out. 00:07:08.001 --> 00:07:12.000 And I started to get very interested in human factors and usability and some of 00:07:12.000 --> 00:07:16.000 the cognitive psychology involved in interactions between people and computers 00:07:16.000 --> 00:07:19.000 and realizing that there was something beyond syntax error or reenter that you 00:07:19.000 --> 00:07:21.000 could do to try to make systems approachable for people. 00:07:22.000 --> 00:07:26.001 And I met Dr. Albert Boudre, who was one of the country's leading researchers in 00:07:26.001 --> 00:07:29.000 human factors and usability, and I just sort of saw the light at that point and 00:07:29.000 --> 00:07:31.000 said, yea, verily, this is something that I want to pursue. 00:07:31.001 --> 00:07:35.001 At the time, Georgia Tech was not interested in having me pursue that. 00:07:35.001 --> 00:07:39.001 They felt that it was more important for PhD students to have a background in 00:07:39.001 --> 00:07:42.001 theoretical information science and theoretical computer science, and I didn't 00:07:42.001 --> 00:07:45.000 really see the need for that for what I was interested in. 00:07:46.000 --> 00:07:49.000 I was more interested in cognitive psychology and that sort of thing, so we just 00:07:49.000 --> 00:07:51.001 sort of said, well, okay guys, if we can't reach an amicable agreement, let me 00:07:51.001 --> 00:07:54.001 take some of these ideas that I've been thinking about doing as a thesis and put 00:07:54.001 --> 00:07:58.000 them in a product, which was when we began designing the Infoscope product. 00:07:58.001 --> 00:08:00.001 Dr. Boudre and I began collaboration on that. 00:08:01.000 --> 00:08:02.000 We'll sort of parallel to this. 00:08:04.000 --> 00:08:07.000 Les Fried, who was the president of MicroStuff, had sort of saved me because a 00:08:07.000 --> 00:08:10.000 terminal that I needed for a demonstration of a system that I'd written for Tech 00:08:10.000 --> 00:08:12.000 had pooped out on me. 00:08:12.000 --> 00:08:15.000 And I left a frantic message on his bulletin board saying, if anybody can 00:08:15.000 --> 00:08:16.001 fix this terminal, please let me know. 00:08:16.001 --> 00:08:18.000 And he left a message back that said, we'll bring it by. 00:08:18.000 --> 00:08:19.001 We'll see if we can take a look at it. 00:08:20.000 --> 00:08:23.001 And so that was when I met Les and heard about crosstalk, and he gave me a copy 00:08:23.001 --> 00:08:25.001 of crosstalk for an Osborne, which I'd picked up on the line. 00:08:26.001 --> 00:08:30.001 And just sort of started batting around ideas about what you could do now that 00:08:30.001 --> 00:08:33.001 this new IBM PC had come out and we were showing a little more memory and a more 00:08:33.001 --> 00:08:35.001 sophisticated screen and a bigger keyboard and that. 00:08:35.001 --> 00:08:38.000 Well, what can we do with communication software, which is 00:08:38.000 --> 00:08:40.000 crosstalk, in that environment? 00:08:41.000 --> 00:08:44.000 And that sort of became a, we collaborated on that and were batting around some 00:08:44.000 --> 00:08:45.001 ideas and what would we really like to have? 00:08:45.001 --> 00:08:49.000 What would be neat to have in a communications program for that sort of machine? 00:08:49.001 --> 00:08:51.001 So crosstalk 16 evolved out of that. 00:08:51.001 --> 00:08:53.001 That got done before Infoscope got done. 00:08:53.001 --> 00:08:56.001 Infoscope was wrapped up, I guess, about, oh, maybe we started shipping in 00:08:56.001 --> 00:08:58.001 March or 00:12:00.001 --> 00:12:04.000 background of Infoscope and what it's really about with the human factors. 00:12:04.001 --> 00:12:05.001 And Crosstalk as well. 00:12:06.000 --> 00:12:07.000 Let's start with Crosstalk. 00:12:07.001 --> 00:12:09.000 It's a little bit more straightforward. 00:12:10.000 --> 00:12:14.000 There is a large number of resources that people can 00:12:14.000 --> 00:12:15.001 access through computers over the phone. 00:12:16.000 --> 00:12:18.001 Things like making airline reservations and all these things 00:12:18.001 --> 00:12:20.000 that you always hear about in the home of tomorrow. 00:12:20.001 --> 00:12:22.000 You just punch the button on your TV set or whatever 00:12:22.000 --> 00:12:24.000 and you find yourself in Las Vegas. 00:12:25.000 --> 00:12:28.000 Crosstalk was designed to allow people with personal computers to communicate 00:12:28.000 --> 00:12:31.001 with other systems over the phone lines using a device called a modem. 00:12:33.000 --> 00:12:36.000 Crosstalk 16, as it evolved, we saw a need for some more sophisticated 00:12:36.000 --> 00:12:38.000 capabilities really for the business user. 00:12:38.001 --> 00:12:41.001 We found that people a lot of times needed to set up a system so that somebody 00:12:41.001 --> 00:12:45.001 who was not particularly technical could use it very easily in their own terms. 00:12:46.001 --> 00:12:48.001 An example I like to use is let's say there's a company and then every Friday 00:12:48.001 --> 00:12:52.000 they need to call their company's computer and get some reports so that 00:12:52.000 --> 00:12:54.000 they can put it on the desk of the people that need it. 00:12:54.000 --> 00:12:57.000 Well, there's no way for us to write a communications program that has a choice 00:12:57.000 --> 00:13:00.000 on a menu than they pick, you know, letter F is download the 00:13:00.000 --> 00:13:02.000 QZ34 report every Friday. 00:13:02.000 --> 00:13:03.001 We don't know that people do that. 00:13:04.000 --> 00:13:10.000 But through the use of some programming capabilities in Crosstalk that are very 00:13:10.000 --> 00:13:13.001 approachable for people without even a lot of programming background, somebody 00:13:13.001 --> 00:13:17.000 who with a little more proficiency can set up that to automate it so that 00:13:17.000 --> 00:13:20.000 somebody who is not all that proficient can just make the choice and 00:13:20.000 --> 00:13:21.001 have all that stuff happen automatically. 00:13:23.000 --> 00:13:26.001 We think that's most important in the business community that we find a lot of 00:13:26.001 --> 00:13:29.001 situations in which there are one or two people at a company who are really into 00:13:29.001 --> 00:13:32.001 PCs and they had one before everybody else had one and they went home some 00:13:32.001 --> 00:13:34.001 weekend and brought something in and said to the boss, gee, look at this, you 00:13:34.001 --> 00:13:37.000 know, I can push this button and all this stuff happens and the boss 00:13:37.000 --> 00:13:38.001 says great, let's order 300 of those. 00:13:39.001 --> 00:13:41.001 Those are the sort of people we really like. 00:13:42.000 --> 00:13:44.001 We like to provide them with the tools that they need to 00:13:44.001 --> 00:13:47.000 create those sort of systems. 00:13:48.000 --> 00:13:49.000 Crosstalk has done very well. 00:13:49.000 --> 00:13:51.000 We get a lot of good user feedback. 00:13:51.001 --> 00:13:55.000 Some people have said that initially they find Crosstalk not as easy to use as 00:13:55.000 --> 00:13:58.000 some system that is strictly menu driven where you just sort of pick a number and 00:13:58.000 --> 00:14:01.000 you say a one, you know, set the phone number two, change what speed you 00:14:01.000 --> 00:14:03.000 want to communicate at, those sorts of things. 00:14:03.001 --> 00:14:09.000 But as I talk about Infoscope, the philosophy behind it is to provide, to realize 00:14:09.000 --> 00:14:12.000 that people aren't static in the way that they interact with the computer. 00:14:13.000 --> 00:14:15.001 Anything that people do, whether it be lifting weights or running 00:14:15.001 --> 00:14:17.000 or whatever, you get better at it. 00:14:17.001 --> 00:14:19.000 You lift weights enough and you can lift more weight. 00:14:19.000 --> 00:14:20.001 You can run faster, farther, whatever. 00:14:21.000 --> 00:14:25.000 And I think it's important in software design to account for that as well. 00:14:25.000 --> 00:14:28.000 As people use a piece of software over an extended period of time, they need to 00:14:28.000 --> 00:14:32.000 be able to circumvent a lot of the water wings and training wheels, if you will, 00:14:32.000 --> 00:14:35.000 that people tend to hang on the systems and be able to get right at it and do 00:14:35.000 --> 00:14:37.000 what it is exactly that they want now and 00:14:37.000 --> 00:14:39.000 not have that interference placed in between. 00:14:39.001 --> 00:14:44.000 So what you really do then is you take your programs and you look at how people 00:14:44.000 --> 00:14:50.001 operate and in a way that makes it less strenuous, 00:22:12.001 --> 00:22:16.001 It basically will allow you to incorporate this information in such a way or 00:22:16.001 --> 00:22:19.000 they're just basically two separate products. 00:22:19.001 --> 00:22:23.001 The products are separate products, but for example, one could use infoscopes, 00:22:24.000 --> 00:22:28.000 say, where say I was trying to develop a sales strategy and I was using infoscope 00:22:28.000 --> 00:22:32.001 to look back through, say, my last month sales, and I asked infoscope to, okay, I 00:22:32.001 --> 00:22:36.001 have a thousand different transactions here and I want to see these sorted by the 00:22:36.001 --> 00:22:38.001 amount of the sale, the total amount of the sale. 00:22:39.000 --> 00:22:41.000 Infoscope will get that information back to you and up on the screen in three 00:22:41.000 --> 00:22:42.001 seconds to sort those thousand records by 00:22:42.001 --> 00:22:44.000 that amount and have them back up there. 00:22:44.000 --> 00:22:46.000 So you say, well, that's not really the information that I wanted. 00:22:46.001 --> 00:22:48.000 I'd rather see these, I really need these things 00:22:48.000 --> 00:22:49.001 sorted by the name of the customer. 00:22:50.000 --> 00:22:52.000 Again, three seconds later, you've got it on your screen. 00:22:52.001 --> 00:22:55.000 I say, okay, this is some information and I've done this and I've done some 00:22:55.000 --> 00:22:56.001 computations and I've got some totals. 00:22:56.001 --> 00:23:00.000 I need to send this to the branch on the East Coast. 00:23:00.000 --> 00:23:04.000 You take that information from infoscope, have it put it out in a format that you 00:23:04.000 --> 00:23:07.001 can use in your word processor, crank up your word processor and wrap a letter 00:23:07.001 --> 00:23:10.000 around it and, dear Joe, this is the report that you wanted. 00:23:10.000 --> 00:23:13.001 Hope this information helps you meet your sales goals for fiscal 1985, you know, 00:23:14.001 --> 00:23:16.000 how's the wife and kids, etc. 00:23:17.000 --> 00:23:21.000 Then you would bring up crosstalk and send that information off to his personal 00:23:21.000 --> 00:23:24.000 computer or perhaps to his company mainframe where he could download it as part 00:23:24.000 --> 00:23:27.000 of that mainframe's mail system or another communications, for example, a remote 00:23:27.000 --> 00:23:29.000 and transporter products, have the capability 00:23:29.000 --> 00:23:31.000 to communicate with crosstalk as well. 00:23:32.000 --> 00:23:35.001 So that's where you get that sort of more of a, they're not integrated software 00:23:35.001 --> 00:23:38.000 in that they all sort of sit around and eat up your machine at once, but they do 00:23:38.000 --> 00:23:40.000 cooperate and enhance each other very nicely. 00:23:40.001 --> 00:23:45.001 So I know we talked just briefly about the lab version and I wanted you to, you 00:23:45.001 --> 00:23:47.000 know, mention what that was about. 00:23:47.001 --> 00:23:48.000 Oh, right. 00:23:48.001 --> 00:23:52.001 I worked up a special laboratory version of infoscope for Dr. Batartis, who's 00:23:52.001 --> 00:23:57.001 doing some research in the idea of transitionality in an interface with a 00:23:57.001 --> 00:24:01.001 computer, meaning basically that you can get better and worse if you need to and 00:24:01.001 --> 00:24:03.001 get more and less support from the system as you work with it. 00:24:04.000 --> 00:24:09.000 The lab version is set up so that it will actually keep records of what exactly a 00:24:09.000 --> 00:24:10.001 user does in any particular situation. 00:24:10.001 --> 00:24:14.000 And then at the end, he can go through and do some computations and some analyses 00:24:14.000 --> 00:24:17.000 and say, yes, indeed, this, our beliefs are correct. 00:24:17.000 --> 00:24:21.000 We found people that as they learned how to use the system, they used the more 00:24:21.000 --> 00:24:24.000 abbreviated forms that were able to get their work done quicker by 00:24:24.000 --> 00:24:26.000 taking advantage of the features that were built in. 00:24:26.000 --> 00:24:29.000 So it keeps a log of, you know, so and so typed in this word, misspelled it, 00:24:29.000 --> 00:24:31.000 infoscope corrected the typing error, six 00:24:31.000 --> 00:24:32.001 seconds later they managed to get that job done. 00:24:33.000 --> 00:24:33.000 Okay. 00:24:33.000 --> 00:24:35.001 At this time they abbreviated the command, this time they pressed a function K 00:24:35.001 --> 00:24:37.001 and it keeps all that information for him. 00:24:38.001 --> 00:24:41.001 And it's kind of nice for him to be able to have access to the guy that wrote the 00:24:41.001 --> 00:24:45.000 program to be able to modify it, to have those sorts of things available to him. 00:24:45.001 --> 00:24:47.001 And he's getting a lot of very interesting information out of that research. 00:24:47.001 --> 00:24:49.001 Where are you going with this whole thing in the future? 00:38:38.000 --> 00:38:44.001 Well, I'm kind of enthralled with typesetting concepts like a product called 00:38:44.001 --> 00:38:47.000 Fon Tricks, which I think is in Denver, Colorado. 00:38:49.001 --> 00:38:53.000 Pretty print I think is the name of a product that is quite nice. 00:38:53.000 --> 00:38:57.001 You can always do what looks like typesetting on a cheap Epson RX80 printer. 00:38:59.001 --> 00:39:04.001 Things like that, things that are uniquely useful and obscure. 00:39:05.001 --> 00:39:09.001 Unfortunately, the problem isn't so much finding a lot of little companies that 00:39:09.001 --> 00:39:11.001 are interesting in it, because there's really tons of them. 00:39:12.000 --> 00:39:14.001 The problem is that software companies don't carry their 00:39:14.001 --> 00:39:16.001 products, the big distributors don't carry their products. 00:39:17.000 --> 00:39:19.000 And this boutique software is very difficult to find. 00:39:19.001 --> 00:39:22.001 It's very hard to buy it from anyone, except directly from the company. 00:39:22.001 --> 00:39:26.001 It's just becoming a real distribution problem is terrible. 00:39:26.001 --> 00:39:30.001 And these little guys are just hanging on for a while, they can do okay when 00:39:30.001 --> 00:39:32.000 their product first comes out. 00:39:32.000 --> 00:39:36.001 Then the next thing you know, they just can't get their product distributed. 00:39:36.001 --> 00:39:38.000 And you can't buy it, you can't buy something else. 00:39:38.001 --> 00:39:40.000 And I feel sorry for all these little guys. 00:39:40.000 --> 00:39:45.001 I know that it's tough competition there, and we've heard recently that IBM 00:39:45.001 --> 00:39:47.001 is getting into the software market. 00:39:47.001 --> 00:39:51.001 And what's it going to look like? What are we looking at in the next couple of 00:39:51.001 --> 00:39:53.001 years, in the next two, three, four, five years? 00:39:54.001 --> 00:39:55.001 Popular computing. 00:39:56.001 --> 00:40:01.000 You know, where is the industry headed? Where's the creativity going to come from 00:40:01.000 --> 00:40:03.001 in the next two, three, four, five years? 00:40:04.000 --> 00:40:06.001 Well, obviously, it's not going to come from IBM. 00:40:07.001 --> 00:40:11.000 I think IBM entering the software market full of force is a big mistake on their 00:40:11.000 --> 00:40:15.000 part, because all microcomputers have been largely successful 00:40:15.000 --> 00:40:16.001 because of third-party developers. 00:40:16.001 --> 00:40:20.001 And third-party developers, if they think IBM is going to burn them off, are 00:40:20.001 --> 00:40:23.001 going to go write software for the Macintosh, or the Amiga, or 00:40:23.001 --> 00:40:25.000 who knows what the Atari machine. 00:40:26.001 --> 00:40:31.000 And I think it might be a strategic error on the part of IBM to get this involved 00:40:31.000 --> 00:40:33.001 in the software business as they're getting involved at this level. 00:40:34.000 --> 00:40:37.000 That is the microcomputer industry, software business. 00:40:38.001 --> 00:40:43.001 Apple has probably got a much better handle on the right way to deal with 00:40:43.001 --> 00:40:47.000 software, which is they encourage to the hilt third-party developers. 00:40:47.001 --> 00:40:50.001 And I think it's a long-term strategy that's been paying off for them. 00:40:50.001 --> 00:40:53.001 And then they have their software evangelist strategy. 00:40:54.001 --> 00:40:59.000 Right. And I think that's a heck of a good strategy. 00:41:00.000 --> 00:41:06.000 Unless they change or try to become IBM or whatever, Apple will have a long-term 00:41:06.000 --> 00:41:08.001 growth that I think will surprise a lot of people. 00:41:09.001 --> 00:41:13.000 John, let me ask you, I'm going to shift gears here for a minute before we leave. 00:41:13.001 --> 00:41:14.001 How did you get started? 00:41:16.000 --> 00:41:20.000 How did you first become interested in computing?
